“Hold the book up a little higher, please,” Billy called down to Eli, bending down as he clung to the ladder so he could actually see the words scrawled on the page.
“Why don’t you just levitate the book and yourself?” Eli asked, clearly disgruntled about having to play book stand. “For that matter, why don’t you do this down here?”
“It doesn’t work if I’m touching the floor, and I drop like a stone if I cast this spell while hovering. Now hold the book up and let me focus.” He mouthed the words silently before chanting them out loud. The Lair shivered before settling, the windows glowing faintly for a few moments longer. “There.”
“What did you do?” Eli asked.
“Protected the Lair. Anyone I don’t want coming in, can’t. I’ll include everyone else in the control part of the spell in a minute.” Billy climbed down, tossing his cape over his shoulder.
“Even Vision?”
Billy snatched the book out of Eli’s hand and shut it with a snap, jaw tensing. Kate and Cassie came in, with Tommy on their heels… until he hit the threshold and was knocked on his ass.
“You set the barrier against Tommy?” Eli asked.
“Just this once,” Billy admitted.

“Where the hell have you been, Tak?” Mina asked, walking down the dusty one lane road as her fellow super villain walked beside her, hoodie pulled up over the slowly growing stubble on his head.
“Meeting people. Making friends,” the Chinese boy said.
“In this pimple of a town? That takes talent.” She looked up at the perfectly blue sky.
“Where are Jessie and Kang?”
“Pretending to be me and fuck if I know,” Mina laughed.
“And where are we going?”
Mina sucked on her teeth. “I don’t know. Nowhere, I guess, with just us.”
“I am thinking I will go see my new friend,” Tak said. “I am thinking you should come with me. Then we will get burgers and milkshakes.”
“You’re a simple guy, you know that, Tak?”
