William Kaplan, Royal Consort of Dorrek VIII and Magus of the Imperial Court , was bleeding. This came as a surprise to everyone except Stephanie Bradley, the second person in the family to answer to the code name of Patriot.
“Damn. I was aiming for his head,” she hissed, dropping her rifle and making a break for it. The Skrulls, she knew, would already be converging on her position.
For William, the world was full of pain and blood as his bodyguards formed a wall of bodies around him and hurried him back to a shuttle. The Emperor was already being informed of this new development.
Each Skrull in the unit assigned to the consort prayed to whatever god might listen that the human would live. He was not particularly well liked by the people, but the Emperor took it very badly when something happened to his paramour, and the Emperor’s displeasure often ended in the slow death of those who displeased him.
