Ray-Ray ran her tongue over her teeth and pushed the door to her mother’s home office open. She was bent over the keyboard of her computer, typing away, her hair pulled back in a no nonsense pony tail and a pair of glasses perched on her nose.
“Momma?”
Her mother looked up, pushing her glasses up her nose with one finger. “Rachel? You should be in bed. It’s late.”
“Are you and Daddy getting divorced?” Ray-Ray asked. “Cause Ginger said her mommy and daddy got divorced when he got a boyfriend, and Daddy’s got Uncle Vic, so…”
“Oh, Rachel…”
“And you and Daddy fight a lot,” Ray-Ray went on as her mother gathered her close, pulling the girl into her lap.
“Rachel, honey, your daddy and I aren’t married, and no matter what happens between us, we both love you very much.”
“And Uncle Vic?”
“Of course.” She pressed a kiss to Ray-Ray’s forehead as she stood up, setting the little girl down. “Now back to bed with you.”
