Victor Borkowski put his hand on his hips and looked at the herd of children watching him the way that hyenas watched a wounded zebra. He looked at Molly, who was on the phone trying to hunt down someone --anyone-to take Chase’s place as the third escort of the herd.
“Okay,” he said, returning his attention to the children, “we’re still going to the zoo, just a little later than planned. Rebecca, Robert, we’re counting on you to help us. You’re the oldest, and you’re both responsible, okay?”
Bobby chewed thoughtfully on a candy bar that had apparently come from nowhere, and Becca elbowed him. “Yes Uncle Victor,” she said, giving her brother a pointed look.
“Yuh-huh,” Bobby added.
“Can I have a hot dog?” Ray-Ray asked. “With everyone and a great big soda?”
“The hot dog’s doable, but we’re gonna have to negotiate over the soda, hon.”
“Is Dad gonna come?” Dexter asked.
“Maybe later in the day.”
“Who else is coming?” Jeff asked. “The Dads never let us go out in a big group without more adults.”
“We’re still working on that.”
