William studied his fingernails, or at least he pretended to, as Dorrek watched him. “I just think it would be a good idea for you to show my guards some support. It’s not like you haven’t done this before, when one of your men showed particular courage in the face of overwhelming odds, like Victor did.”

“Hn.” Dorrek pursed his lips and ran a hand through his hair, smoothing it down. “I don’t doubt Victor’s courage, but…”

“It would show that you have some faith in us Earthlings,” William pointed out. “I’d do it myself, if I had the authority.” His voice was as carefully neutral as his face, but he couldn’t seem to keep the trace of bitterness from creeping in.

It was that bitterness that gave the emperor pause. “I have faith in you,” he said, though it sounded weak to his ears.

William said nothing, instead picking at something under his fingernail.

“Maybe a knighthood,” Dorrek went on. “I’ll think on it.”

This seemed to please William, and Dorrek relaxed a little. But he still was not overly fond of the idea.
