William had been very successful in convincing his family, after his return, that he wanted to be left alone. He had been helped, in large part, by the fact that when his grandfather had tried to talk to him after his escape from the Skrull throneworld, he had broken the old man's nose. He had then proceeded to explain very calmly that he did not want to talk about what had happened to him, nor did he want to see anyone involved in giving him to the Skrull Emperor ever again.

This meant that he was essentially cutting himself off from everyone except for his mother (who, it seemed, had been very upset when she had awoken from a coma to find her son gone), and his brother (whom no one had seen since a few days after the hostilities between the Skrull Empire and Earth had ended).

He'd taken a few possessions, a generous amount of money from the treasury (telling his grandfather as he had done so that if he was going to treat his grandson like a whore, than by God he was going to be paid for it), and left to make a new life.

He hadn't gone far; he'd rented a flat in Hammer Bay, with a pleasant enough view of the bay itself.

One of the advantages of looking as ordinary as he did was that no one really recognized William as a member of the House of Magnus. Occasionally, someone he ran in to would say point out his resemblance, but William would just laugh it off, pointing out that lots of people looked like the Lehnsherrs.

There were the Crimson Guardsmen that followed him, of course, but William was perfectly willing to ignore them as long as they didn't make themselves too obvious. The last one who had had found himself teleported right into the bay.

Still... William found himself feeling restless. For the first time in his life, his fate was in his own hands, and he didn't know what he wanted to do. He could easily live off the money he'd taken, do nothing at all, but that... that would be incredibly dull. Mostly, these days, he spent his time at a cafe on the water front, just thinking.

Sometimes, he wondered what had happened to the Emperor. He hadn't found out that the Shi'ar had gone to war with the Skrulls until after he'd gotten back to Earth. His grandfather had taken advantage of this sudden change in the intergalactic political situation to force the Skrulls off Earth, and they seemed more interested in handling the Shi'ar than taking Earth back.

William hoped the bastard was dead, his head decorating a pike somewhere. He'd been tempted to track Dorrek down when he'd realized the inhibitor collar wasn't working anymore, but William was ultimately a practical soul, and he'd had no idea if he'd ever get the chance to escape again.

"Excuse me? Is this seat taken?"

William looked up to find a blonde man watching him hesitantly. He looked at the empty seat across from him, then at the man, and managed something that was almost a smile.

"It is now."
