Jean-Paul Beaubier sat up suddenly, clamping his hands over his ears, trying to block out the piercing wail coming from down the hall. He squeezed his eyes shut, swearing quietly for several minutes before rising from his bed with growing reluctance. During the day, there was a nanny to deal with these kinds of things, but the woman who had worked nights for Jean-Paul since he had brought Lucian home had quit, and Jean-Paul had not yet found a replacement he deemed suitable. He glared at the clock as if it had personally offended him; the bright red numbers floating in front of his eyes before settling on 3:48. He staggered out of the bedroom and down the hall, too tired to run, and relatively certain that whatever was upsetting his nephew wasn’t that urgent. He opened the door, blinking in the soft light of the penguin shaped nightlight. The room was done in shades of blue and white, shading from the snowy white carpet to the dark blue, glow-in-the-dark star studding ceiling.

Lucian continued to wail indignantly as Jean-Paul leaned over the side of the crib. The cries did not cease until Jean-Paul lifted the baby boy, holding him close. “This cannot go on,” he sighed. “I need to sleep. You need to sleep. WHY do you insist on crying at this unholy hour?” He groaned, sitting down in the rocking chair. Lucian made a cooing noise, and Jean-Paul set the chair rocking with a slow push of his foot. “You are lucky to have me.”

Lucian’s head lolled against Jean-Paul’s shoulder, and soon a thin trail of drool was soaking in to his t-shirt. “I’m lucky to have you,” he admitted softly, stroking the downy soft hair on Lucian’s head.
