“I do not think I should have come,” Iris said, watching her breath come out in little white puffs. Out on the frozen pond, Didi Stein skittered across the ice, her hands clutching those of her grandparents. “This country is too cold.”

Dexter waved to his daughter, speaking quietly to his lover. “I guess I’m used to it.”

They fell into an uncomfortable silence, watching and not talking about the many awkward, uncomfortable things that stood between them. She’d come under the excuse that she needed to talk to the Abidemi woman, and once she’d given up on that, she’d come to see Dexter and Didi… who were visiting Angel’s parents, who in turn had not really welcomed their granddaughter’s father’s new girlfriend. They hadn’t been mean or anything, but it was clear they tolerated her ongoing presence only because Didi loved her.

“Coming here was a mistake,” Iris finally admitted.

Dexter turned his head, mouth open, but was interrupted by a tall, slim figure that vaulted the back of the bench, coming to rest between them. Genevieve Abidemi looked up at the grey sky as a few small flakes started to fall. “So I’ve been thinking,” the woman said. “About stuff.” She pulled her knit cap down over her ears. “Who’s the kid?”

“My daughter,” Dexter said. “Who are-”

“This is Genevieve,” Iris said, shushing him. “You were thinking…?”

“I don’t want to talk to anyone while I’m there. No shamans. Not even your father. No one. Just me and the goddess.”

“I cannot make any promises about people talking to you, but I can do my best.”

Iris looked around the lighter skinned woman, meeting Dexter’s curious gaze.

“Daddy, look!” Didi called as she skated unsteadily forward, unsupported.

“That’s great, baby!”

“I can go right now,” Iris said.
