Authors Notes/Disclaimer: I own nothing. Obviously an AU, for those of you who haven’t been paying attention. And holy crap, how did this verse get so long?
Dorrek watched William pace and seethe, quietly putting out the tiny fire he accidentally started on the carpet. To say that his beloved was upset would have been something of an understatement. William wanted his bodyguard back, now, and he wasn’t likely to stop raging until he got his way. It was a childish tantrum, but the fact was that Dorrek wanted the reptile back too (though for very different reasons than William).
It had been Kl’rt who had pointed out that Victor’s position had granted him all kinds of access to the inner workings of the Empire. He knew things that Dorrek would prefer the humans not learn, simply because he was bodyguard to Dorrek’s consort. And bodyguards were like wallpaper; there, all the time. Dorrek had barely even considered Victor’s existence before he had begun to doubt William’s fidelity.
Wrongfully, Dorrek reminded himself as he stamped out another carpet fire.
Assassinating the human was out of the question. That would do nothing to calm William, and Dorrek had long since learned that William had a talent for ferreting out buried secrets. So even if Dorrek had the bodyguard executed and managed to keep it a secret from the House of Magnus, William would find out… and nothing was worth what would happen after that.
But Dorrek already had the beginnings of a better plan forming. He just needed to wait a little longer and hope to all the gods that he survived his mother-in-law’s visit.
