Victor was a master of the art of hiding his emotions. He didn’t let so much as a flicker of his growing anger show as Princess Wanda directed him first in the packing of her wardrobe (You have servants for this, he’d thought), then the unpacking, then the repacking. And then there was the carrying of the luggage, the fetching of the drinks, the making of a new drink because Her Highness didn’t like the old one… all things she didn’t subject her other bodyguards to. He bore up under the endless stream of trivial tasks stoically, refusing to let anyone see how he felt. He knew perfectly well what his real position was, and why the princess had insisted on the transfer to her staff.
Victor was her Whipping Boy. She was still angry at William for running off with someone she didn’t approve of, and she was taking it out on him because William was out of reach.
And no one did anything about it because what Wanda wanted, Wanda got. Even the weekly debriefing sessions about what Victor had seen during his time with William had ground to a halt thanks to Her Highness and her constant interruptions.
Now she was dragging Victor along on her ‘friendly little visit’ to see her son and son-in-law.
Never before had Victor wished for someone to attack a member of the royal family, but he was reaching the point where an assassination attempt would have been a welcome distraction.
