Yes, this has actually happened to me. I took it home because of co-worker pressure but I feel sobad :< m-my conscience, it hurts me. Help meeeee what should I do.
....TELL your boss/manager/supervisor or whatever. And be ready to hand it over if they ask you to. By doing so you demonstrate that you're honest and trustworthy, which is far more valuable than a little extra cash, especially in the long run. You can still politely ask if there's a chance you can keep it if no one claims it, anyway, and there's also a chance that you might just be told to keep it, it doesn't matter.
That was my initial impulse and the reason I felt so bad when I ended up taking it home. I probably would have handed it in the first place if, you know, there HAD been a manager around, but there usually isn't on a Friday late night. Before I even saw this I decided to go back and hand it in. Ironically, the manager I spoke to said he would have just kept it.
What made it hard to do was a) I had three people about ready to whack me over the head for not wanting to keep it and b) ...I currently owe people a lot of money from school expenses.
Well, if there's no one around, then it's understandable at least not mentioning it right away. XD And in any case it IS a good idea to at least tell your manager, for the reasons I mentioned above. Even if they say they'd have just kept it, doing the right thing gives a good impression and benefits you in the long run, especially when getting recommendations for new employment and stuff.
Where I used to work, if someone found money, you gave it to the supervisor, who then marked who found it, and if someone hasn't come to claim it in a week, you get it.
I don't know if your store has the same kind of policy, though.
There wasn't actually anyone around to ask what the policy is. Apparently it does depend on who you ask, but there's always a two week claim period. Sometimes it does go to the person who found it, but sometimes the company keeps it. Which, considering it's a multi-million pound company, is a little irritating, but I may still get it back yet.
