George Saotome, office oni extraordinaire, burst into his boss’s office in a flurry of tears and flailing arms.
“This is terrible, boss!” he wailed at the baby sitting at the desk. “The results of the popularity poll came out-” He jerked a crumpled piece of parchment to the pokerface of the toddler. “You-YOU DIDN’T WIN!”
“Number 2,” Koenma muttered through an emphatic suck on his pacifier.
“That’s because they disqualified your teenage form, Koenma-sama, saying it’s not really as cute as-”
“Number 1, George Saotome.”
“Ah-! Hehe? Um…”
“Did you bother dragging your carcass here just so you could gloat?”
“No! No, Koenma-sama! I was here to protest my inclusion to that contest-”
“Well, I think you’re cute, George-san,” came the quiet reassurance of the ferry girl Ayame, as the oni gibbered and scolded himself. “I think you deserve to be number 1 most popular in the office.”
“Yeah, you’re cute,” Koenma said, returning to his mounds of paperwork. “Cute like a lamprey, like a komodo dragon.”
The blue oni took a final watery look at his favorite boss and ran away sobbing in heartbreak.
