I love it when moments like this sneak up on me. I've decided what I want to do with my life. I know I say that alot, but I'm set on this and it makes sense compeletly. I want to get a Masters in Cultural Anthropology and then hopefully make documentaries for the discovery channel ( Read more... )

OK. I've been pretty darn busy lately. I used to have a zillion things I was behind on, now I have a zillion and one. ;)

Oh, go you! That's really cool.

Pitt is great for South American Anth and Arch. They also do a lot of North American as well. Actually, it's a great place to do a Masters if you want to go back to Pittsburgh. If he's still there, one of the profs at Pitt did his Ph.D. at Cambridge and a lot of field work in Siberia in paleozoology. Chicago is known for Egyptology. If you're thinking of overseas in an English speaking country, I know that Sheffield is spectacular for Celtic and British stuff. I took classes in their Archaeology faculty so I'm not too sure about their Anth program. Wales has some good programs as well, I think.

I don't know too much about programs that deal with Eastern European countries. My focus was more British/Celtic archaeology.

you rock man! i knew you'd pounce on this post. the area i want to study, i'm not sure of yet. i'm thinking central/south america or africa actually. pitt is on my list because i remembered ross and you telling me they were good for central america. i'm looking into univ. of florida and univ. of maryland too.

keep in mind I just came up with this, so i have loads of research to do. any links or infro related to anthro or grad schools, is very appreciated.

You do realize that I made excited squeaky noises when I read that. I've been looking into online MA programs since I'm here for a while. You don't really have to settle on one region, though. You can do more general work, I think for Anthro.

It's just really neat that you want to go into the film aspect of it! The Discovery Channel needs its butt kicked for some of the stuff they've put out in the past few years. :)

i thought you'd like that. though you shouldnt be shocked, i wanted to do a double with urban studies and anthro for awhile as an undergrad, but i couldn't shake my first love (film). i really want to make documentaries like born in brothels and things that study societies. but you could even look at how film effects society in third world countries too. thats something that interested me a lot when i was studying indian cinema and the role US film played on the country, not just its movies.

now that dig you made about discovery better not be refering to my fav show, mythbusters. and dirty jobs is great too :) i hate to admit though that i don't get to watch much more than those two shows cause tv time is so sparse for me no cause i spend most my time teaching myself italian, editing or reading.

i wanted to tell you.... there is a teacher at the school that i'm doing my student teaching at that was in the peace corps and he loved it. i don't remember where exactly he said that he was stationed at, but he met his wife there and brought in some beautiful pictures... it seems pretty cool. Just as long as you don't get sent to Iraq or Iran or somewhere like that right in the middle of the war :) I hope everything is going well for you... I haven't talked to you for a while.... :) seeya dude! :)

common misconception about Peace Corps, they don't ever place people in a country that didn't request volunteers first. And then the State Dept. goes in and determines if it's safe or not. And the minute a war starts or something that would endanger volunteers, they pull them out (they just recently did in an Asian country this week because of health reasons). So basically, they would never dream of sending people to Iraq or Iran because its not safe, nor have the goverments requested workers.
