His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. It's a trilogy, the individual books are The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. So, so good!

Perhaps this is too late and I'm simply making an ass of myself for tossing in my two cents after the deadline but as I consistently beg people to tell me new authors and books I need to be reading, I feel oddly compelled to respond to this post.
