If I ever meet you in person I promise to pronounce your name correctly! One of my closest friends is of Thai descent and as we were growing up, teachers would get to her name on the roll, and stop and stare. She'd always yell out, "That's me!" Hee.

I can imagine how irritating that must be.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that, while I was teaching, we had an African student with a long, multi-syllabic African name that no European was ever going to get their tongue round. The first syllable sounded vaguely like "murf", and throughout his time with us he was known as "Murphy".

I have a last name that is not common, but there is a fairly common spelling of it. Unfortunately, my name is not spelled the common way.

Often I will get faxes at work for Cathy (or Cathleen) with the last name spelled incorrectly!
