This might seem like a silly idea... But you could walk the troublesome hill? =)

I approve anyway; yay for cycling! it is the way forward!

Yes walking it may seem the clever thing to do, but what makes it so troublesome is that it is so long! I make more time cycling it at 5mph than walking at 3 or 2... (I'm tired at that point)
