The WTF is strong with this one

Wish I had a camera phone...

I just got back from a quick run to the local Petco (OMG we were out of cow hoofies!) which is, of course crawling with Cesar Milan books, treats, special enhanced water (whu???) and...WTF...stainless steel dog treat canisters.

Printed on the side of these canisters:

Calm
Submissive

I feel so inadequate. My old ceramic dog ( Read more... )

Which one, the submissive or the cookies?

Maybe I should make submissive cookies!

I have to say that his marketing is very smart. If people are stupid enough to buy Cesar Millan water than let him become a millionaire off those idiots. That said, I had to roll my eyes when all saw all that crap. Looks like I will be avoiding Petco like the plague if they want to support Cesar. Not that I really shopped there anyhow, but even now and then I did.

Oh and if you don't hurry and buy a Dog Whisperer dog bed your dog is going to take over the world!

He saw an opportunity, he realised that his doggies need some more softballs and he lept.

What a clever cookie from the "Clever Human" jar he is :)

I only go in there to buy cow hoofies. Better quality food is available for less $$ at two other places in town -- including our no-kill humane society.

Sometimes I go in to buy cookies if I can't find the time to go anywhere else. I don't buy cookies often, so I probably walk into a Petco once every 6 months. I prefer to buy things from privately owned places if they have things I like.

That's great your no kill shelter sells good food for a good price. Smart of them!

I adore him, so I feel your pain.

The basis lies in his "pack" dynamic, which dog experts claim to be not only incorrect but harmful (and out of date). The dominance paradigm that Cesar uses is claimed to be cruel and fear-based, not to mention inappropriate as dogs don't behave the same way as wolves. Which I find odd, as the analysis I've seen of wild and feral dog packs likens them strongly to wolf packs.

Cesar is also self-taught, so those who have actual Ph.D's in Animal Psychology are butt-hurt because they don't have their own shows and following.

Do you disagree with the fact that alpharolling and flooding can be both harmful and dangerous?

Cesar gets a few things right, like many destructive dogs that are acting up really just need a lot of exercise and structure to their lives, but trying to take an aggressive approach like that really isn't necessary in the majority of cases.

Every time I stop by the Petco out here, some associate is trying to sell me Millan this and Millan that. Then they ask me about my dog and tell me how well behaved she is. Which leads to "oh, you train dogs? So you must love Cesar Millan!"

Fun times. Really.

(And to be honest, I kind of do like him. He makes me a lot of money when I get called to fix the mistakes owners make with their dogs using his techniques, or going to a different trainer who uses the same ones. THANKS CESAR.)
