In the dog training field, specifically Sit Means Sit, remote dog training collars are used as a tool to provide a remote controlled cue. The cue is designed to neither cause pain nor to disrupt the dog’s emotional state, but rather to function as an adjustable “tap”. The approach used by Sit Means Sit trainers is to treat the “tap” from the collar ( Read more... )

I can buy that a gentle leash-tug is a cue. But a shock? Uh, how do they explain the choice of a shock over, say, a beep?? Or a mild vibration? (Or do they claim that all a shock collar delivers is a mild vibration? Last I checked you don't need metal touching the skin to deliver vibration.)

And it says on their site:

The technology that is utilized in the construction of our collar is similar technology to “electronic muscle stimulators” and “TENS” units. You may be familiar with the use of these devices in the medical field

Augh! I'm "familiar" with my mom's TENS unit, if by "familiar" you mean "was once shocked by it and now won't even hug my mother when she's got it turned on"!

Are they actually talking about shock collars? I've seen remote control collars that just vibrate, for example.

Sit Means Sit is positive punishment based "training". Dog does not sit? Zap. Still not sitting? Crank it up a notch and zap again. Sooner or later, dog either stumbles into "right" behavior and they stop frying the dog, or the dog completely frikking shuts down. It's about the worst use of a shock collar possible, and it's a franchise, so there's more "trainers" of this "method" all the time. And no, there is no pre-training before they slap the collar on and start punishing non-compliance.

You mean it's not a tickle? I thought shock collars tickle dogs.

"SMS" training is hated EVEN by people who use e-collars. Seriously the guy is a DOUCHE he doesn't stim he just BLASTS the HELL out of a dog CONTINUALLY until they comply

Ugh. I can see both sides of the reasonable-use/zero-tolerance debate on shock collars, but abusing dogs with an electronic device just makes me see red. It doesn't hurt that I'm absolutely terrified of electricity after being shocked by an aquarium filter.
