What a raving cockdouche, a term I have made up for just this occasion. How dare he think that because sometimes, someone looks at him funny if he's with another person that he actually thinks he has it harder than being gay. How many incidents are there of being punished for "walking while poly"? I bet a damn lot fewer than "walking while butch".

I wouldn't mind the pity party if he had acknowledged at the outset that EVERY one of these things is relevant to a LGBTQ person or really, anyone of different sexual preference. Instead it's an attempt to make his pain seem new and different. Go fuck a nettle.

I think that he really ought to have acknowledged that marginalisation of poly people is not equivalent to that experienced by lgb persons, yup, although I think I missed the bit where he claimed it was worse.

I think the problem is that a privilege list of 'relationship orientation' does make it sound too similar and equivalent to one based on 'sexual orientation'

It's a bit like comparing the problems people with ginger hair might face with those faced by black people. People with ginger hair (especially here in the UK) can get a lot of grief and bullying about it but it's in no way equivalent to racism.

Doesn't mean that bad treatment of ginger people doesn't deserve to be discussed but if it's being discussed in a way that references racism then it really ought to be acknowledged that the two aren't equivalent.

Oh now that's weird. As far as I know I've never experienced that particular kind of oppression, and I'm a redhead. (Maybe because it looks more like strawberry blonde?). The closest I've seen or heard of concerning that is the common belief that redheads have fiery tempers. Then again, I live in the US, not the UK.

Hmmm. This brings a whole new dimension to the Harry Potter books, given that the entire Weasley family is made up of redheads.

Reginald D Hunter compares racism in the UK to the US

Ginger haired children can certainly can get a fair bit of grief and bullying; I know a fair few redheads that are really sensitive to being called a 'ginger'.

I don't think it's much of a problem for adults really though. I love this clip of Catherine Tate though: Catherine Tate - Kitten Problem - J. Ross

Prejudice against ginger haired people appears as part of her sketch show as well. The 'strawberry blonde' comment makes me think of this: linky

Sure, this list points out some mono privilege. But the amount of straight privilege is overfuckingwhelming. I'm always so disappointed when people who should really know better write things like this. Ugh.

And this poor straight white male has officially failed to jump on the bandwagon of Social Justice. Valiant attempt, but he was aiming too hard for the Ally Cookies And Milk Section and completely overshot into the Sea of Fail.

Won't someone think of him.

you're wrong in at least one of those assumptions.

The White Knight has appeared!

Correct me, then.

Oh. It's a woman. Well then. Prefix fe- to "male" and s- to "he" and my point still stands. It's sad you had to resort to nitpicking rather than challenge my point.

I find it even sadder when women aim for the Ally Section and overshoot, as a woman myself.

I see a lot of people assuming that the author of the piece is male, which I know to be false.

Heh, I was unfamiliar with the name 'Cory' but, yup, is unisex. Bad assumption on my part.

The assumption of her being straight and white struck me as being a bit more odd mind, although they could easily happen to be true.

I was wondering when someone would bring that up.. arxacies May 13 2011, 15:51:54 UTC
I remember when she first posted this on Fetlife.

She is white, though. I'm not sure if she is bi or not, though.

To be completely fair to her, I haven't tested the points involving children... but the others would fail for me even if I were mono.
