Catching up

I moved to 45th Street in Oakland proper, 4 blocks away from my old place. I have more news than that. My sister Dawn got married in July, and it was great; it brought my whole family together. My sister Jennifer recently got her Master's and came home to stay with my folks for a while. I personally am pleased with that, but she has mixed ( Read more... )

It's nice to read a positive post. Thank you. It reminds me a bit of Jeanette Winterson's yuletide posts, which I always love.

I'm reading "The Darkroom of Damocles" right now. Have you read it?

I totally haven't. Sounds dark, interesting. Have you read anything else by this author? Why did you pick that one up?

I haven't had a lot of cognitive room for reading anything non-pulp for a while, a long while now that I think about it. Since the move I've been even shorter on stuff to read (all the books are still packed in their 36 boxes with no unpacking in sight) so I've been basically choosing at random from the tops of boxes on the tops of stacks.

I read one of JW's Christmas posts this morning to try to see the similarity. It's a nice comparison but not easy for me to see. I did want to be positive, though.

While we're talking books, Connie Willis has a new novel coming out in February! A full-length one. I'm thrilled.

I haven't read anything else by him. I was late for dinner at Jeff's house one night (and of all the social engagements in Ithaca, one should *not* be late for dinner at Jeff's house), but I decided to stop by the bookstore anyway. I had recently started reading Nabokov's "Speak, Memory" but found I didn't have the cognitive capacity for it at the moment. This book had an alluring cover, a nice heft and a blurb by Milan Kundera calling it a thriller that he read in one sitting ( ... )
