In-Character Information
Name: Byrne
Game/Series: The Legend of Zelda
Teacher/Student/Other: Teacher
Canon Point: After being injured by Malladus the first time.
Age: Just kidding you guys, apparently he's like 200. The game NEVER MENTIONED THIS that I can remember.
Grade Level/Class Taught/Job: Martial Arts Teacher
Dorm or Living Arrangement: Dorm
Personality: Cold and aloof, Byrne is a man motivated by greed and power. He thinks highly of himself and his fighting skills, to the point where he feels that a fight against a human is unfairly matched, with the match highly in his favor. He tends not to listen to authority, preferring instead to go his own way. He abandoned what he was expected to do, in guarding the Spirit Tower, as he let his power get to his head, and desired to become as strong as the spirits. He ignored his master and joined the dark side, essentially, in order to fulfill that lust. As a teacher, it's possible he could let the position get to his head and attempt to climb ranks, or reign superior to the students. Or, he could become so bored with the job that he would abandon it completely, instead desiring to find something "better."
However, underneath that greed and lust, there is a golden heart, at least a small one. He can realize the error of his ways and try to repent, even going so far as giving his own life. He will help others if he believes it necessary as well. Although, it can take a lot for that side of him to come out... He would most likely have to have a strong epiphany or be in mortal peril for his truly good side to show. Perhaps if he had extensive therapy, he could be better at behaving well, but otherwise you will most likely see him as cold and selfish.
Backstory: Byrne is a member of the race of Lokomos, servants of the Spirits of Good. The Lokomos are in charge of guarding the seal on the Demon King, Malladus, and watching over mankind. They guard the temples of the four realms of "new" Hyrule and the Spirit Train.
Byrne was an apprentice of Anjean, the guardian of the Spirit Tower. However, he let the power of his race get to his head and desired more power from the Spirits. The Spirits, though, would not grant him anymore power, and he grew frustrated as a result. He then left his apprenticeship on bad terms and sought out a way to increase his power.
As the Lokomos were in charge of protecting the seal on Malladus, Byrne realized that if he broke the seal, he could receive Malladus' power and become as strong as the Spirits themselves, as he so desired. He subsequently teamed up with the evil Chancellor Cole, leader of the realm, to begin the resurrection process of the Demon King. Cole most likely valued Byrne's strength, as he seemed to rely on him to do most of the fighting and dirty work. He also used Byrne's power as a servant of the Spirits to create a Compass of Light, which revealed the Spirit Tracks leading into the Dark World, so that Cole could find and use the Demon Train.
Together, Cole and Byrne made the Spirit Tracks, the chains binding the Demon King, disappear, thus breaking the seal. They then confronted Link and Zelda, with Cole revealing his true intentions to the Princess. He ordered Byrne to attack, and he did with ease, quickly injuring Link's mentor Alfonzo. As Cole separated Zelda's spirit from her body, Byrne carried the body away, ready to use it as a vessel for Malladus' resurrection.
After Link and Zelda's spirit restored most of the Spirit Tracks in the land, Byrne angrily confronted them, ready to kill them and continue with Malladus' resurrection. Anjean stepped in, though, and allowed Link and Zelda to escape. Unfortunately, Anjean was quite injured in her battle with Byrne, as he showed no regard for his former master. Upon Link and Zelda's return, Byrne was ready to kill them again. Working together, they were able to defeat Byrne in battle and leave him slightly injured.
Desperate, Byrne clamored into Malladus' resurrection chamber to witness his resurrection into Zelda's body. He immediately stepped forward and proclaimed that he was the one who revived the Demon King, and desired some of his power. Malladus, in response, merely zapped Byrne with his immense power, causing the man to fall unconscious on the ground with severe injuries.
Link, Zelda's spirit, and Anjean returned to the Spirit Train with Byrne's unconscious form in tow, and Zelda wished for him to recover. It is at this point that I take him from the canon and the rest is my own stuff.
Zelda's spirit and Link venture into the Sand Temple to retrieve the Bow of Light, leaving Byrne and Anjean in the passenger car of the Spirit Train. Byrne finally regains consciousness, and while it is difficult for him to move, he is still able to do so. Seeing Anjean resting, he quietly stands up and exits the train, leaving a short, curt note explaining where to find the Compass of Light. There's nothing on the note consisting of an apology, but this note's aid is more than enough for the crew.
Fueled by his feelings of betrayal, he desperately hopes that Link and Zelda will prevail and defeat Malladus so he can essentially be avenged. At this point, Byrne does realize, at least in passing, that his quest for power had gotten out of hand. However, it is out of his hands now, and if Link and Zelda were able to best Byrne in battle, then surely they could defeat Malladus.
He then hides out and recovers from his injuries, pondering what to do with his life next. He no longer had a master, he no longer had Malladus' resurrection to plan for, and he had no desire to serve the Spirits that had betrayed him and denied him power. It is upon his wandering through the land that he discovers Smash Academy. Having nothing else, he decides to venture inside the building.
Anything Else?: I mentioned Byrne's an excellent fighter. Not only physically, but magically too! He also has kick-ass theme music. Also, because I'm a horrible music nerd and have a Bachelor of Music and am working on my Master of Music, I decided that he plays the guitar. All of the other Lokomos are instrumentalists, so it's not unlikely that he learned some sort of instrument, especially if he was training to take over the guarding of a realm. Besides, there's just something endearing about a man and his guitar.
In-Character 1st person writing sample (journal): To think that I had the patience to teach the art of fighting. Ha! The students are nothing more than sniveling cowards. My instruction in the matter is, at best, futile. The weaklings could not even fight a twig if they tried! Then again, perhaps not everyone is as gifted as I am when it comes to the art of battle. We are born with innate talent, and apparently the student body lacks any whatsoever.
In-Character 3rd person writing post: A teacher: that was the last thing Byrne had ever thought he'd become. Of course, when he was young and actually had a desire to take over the guarding of the Spirit Tower, he could picture in his elder years becoming a master to an apprentice, but nothing like this.
It was almost too funny. He had desired unimaginable power, and instead he ended up with a meager job at a lowly school, having to pay dues to a union simply for being there. Then again, Byrne had told himself that this was merely a temporary setting until something better came along. He didn't belong at this ludicrous job, ranking students from A to F based on their abilities and receiving apples on his desk. Well, he wasn't sure if he was going to have a desk. He was teaching the art of physical combat, after all, which wouldn't work sitting down.
He sighed, looking over the school's map. There were no train stations here that he knew of, thankfully. Hopefully Anjean, Link, and Zelda wouldn't be able to find him here, since without their rail system, they had no way of traveling here. Then again, he mused, it seemed that nobody in Hyrule had ever heard of alternative transportation, such as horses, or even walking. Not that it mattered now. What mattered now was finding the gymnasium and arriving to teach his first class, as much as he dreaded it. Did these students deserve to have such wisdom of fighting imparted onto them? Probably not. Maybe he would just do drills today.
