Gah. MOAR UPDATE.

So, I just really didn't feel like reinstalling The Sims 2, all the expansions, redoing my downloads folder, etcetc. So, I just decided "Why not start a sims three legacy?"

AND I DID!

I feel your pain. Despite the sims looking like bloated claymation dolls, I bought a copy of S3 and the same thing happened-crashed after 5 minutes.
Damn my 5 year old processor.
