Friday roundup: politics, comics, music, and Jon Stewart

Superman/Batman #26 is one of the many reasons I love comics and what they can do.

Jon Stewart demonstrates yet again why we adore him. (from boing boing, pointed out by twistedchick and many others).

neadods points to "Virginity or Death!", a piece about the HPV vaccine and why some on the Christian right believe young women shouldn't have access to it.

I knew that argument would come out of someone somewhere sometime soon, and Bridget Maher gets the prize for being first.

Forget the thought of cervical cancer at 60...more like at 20. Three of the girls that I work with right now in that age range are being treated for it and one more faces a hysterectomy at 28 because it has spread.

That's enough to put a scare in me at 30...and to hope that they push for that vaccine and do something about this before cervical cancer is even more commonplace than the scary trend that I'm seeing right now.

It's wrong, just wrong, to deny women the means to protect their health. Period.

Not to mention the illogic of the argument that having the means to protect their health will drive young women to become promiscuous.

Sometimes, I have no words.

It's funny, but ever since I renounced Christianity, I've felt a lot better about myself and my views.

There are a lot of reasons to support gay marriage, but one that I especially find appealing is that as a capitalist I am a firm believer in two legal adults engaging in a private contract, anbd let's face it, marriage is a contract. So by opposing gay marriage, one supports regulations interfering with the right of two adults to engage in a private contract. I also even more firmly support same sex couples having a covenant marriage, as it would set an excellent standard.

I honestly haven't heard too much about HPV, but I find that blocking a vaccine to be dishonest and fear is a poor motivator for bull-headed teenagers. I also sometimes wonder if I was the only male out there saving myself for marriage for at least 24 years of my life.

Yet I don't think Christianity itself is the problem. It's a faction within Christianity, isn't it?

Very sensible take on marriage. Did you read Bush's Rose Garden speech about the amendment? It was stunning in its irony. I don't think Bush is very sensible.

Andrew Sullivan has properly designated the pseudo-conservativism of Bush Christianist Socialism, and I do agree that this is a faction of Christianity, but it has mutated and spread as Catholics like Sam Brownback and George Voinovich supported the Ammendment and Norm Coleman, who is Jewish, though I also blame solidarity for some votes, as not all of the "yea" Senators were fundamentalists. I also applaud John McCain for voting against the Ammendment ( ... )

Ooh, what happened in S/B #26? I never keep up feel free to spoil me.

I <3 Jon Stewart. TDS nearly killed me last night playing the American Idol kiss-off song over a montauge or Al Zarkawi clips. Too funny.

It wasn't a plotty type development with S/B #26. This was the issue in tribute to Jeph Loeb's son, Sam, who died of Cancer last year. The part of the comic that really broke me utterly was Jeph Loeb's "Sam's Story," which is a Clark Kent story that all on its own without knowing the background, is one of the most heartbreaking and beautiful short stories I've ever read in a comic.

It's really sad. Be forewarned.

You're the second person to reccomend that Superman/Batman, I should get it...

Without Jon Stewart I would have lost my sense of humor about anything going on in the political front long ago. I would just be banging my head against my computer keyboard (sometimes I do that anyway, but at least I can laugh about it sometimes).

Superman/Batman #26 made me cry. It's lovely and sad.
