So that idea about a recommending community I posted about? I haven't forgotten about it or ditched it, in fact I've been thinking about it a lot the past couple of days again - I really feel like this is something that's missing and that I wish existed, especially any time I set out to try a new game or show or when I look for movies to watch or ( Read more... )

I understand what you mean about the feminism thing and not knowing how to articulate it. And I think that's also one of my problems with feminism itself, that there's a lot of jargon and a lot of theory and it feels as if you're often not taken seriously if you don't know how to use it. But you know when something feels off in a movie or in a newspaper article, don't you? Finding a balance between your own feelings in your own words on the one hand and on the other perhaps some informed paragraphs to put the things you see in movies/shows in a broader context would make that community/website something I would so dig.

I don't know many feminists, let alone ones who'd be into this ~lowbrow entertainment review, but maybe emailing someone like Jessica Valenti or some of the contributors to the Huffington Post is an option? Just putting your problem to them and asking if they'd know people who'd be into your idea?

YES, exactly, that is exactly it! I feel like you're supposed to have like 10 college diplomas in order to be able or even ALLOWED to talk about this at all, like any second someone is going to arrest me for practicing feminism without a licence. And it does kinda feel like that too, like I'm trying to perform surgery with a garden rake or something. Feminism - or every kind of human rights issue really - should be more approachable, it should be something everyone can and should and does talk about. Including and especially in entertainment IMO, I can wax poetically about the importance and significance of culture (and how that includes ALL forms of culture, especially the lowbrow stuff). I shall refrain though, don't worry ( ... )

This is a great idea! I believe in this, and I certainly believe in you, wires. It sounds complex, yes, but I wonder if it has to be? In order to reach a broader audience, couldn't it be a good idea to take a more accessible approach and use a sort of language that people will in fact understand? I mean, if there's one person I know that just has a gift for language and writing, it's you, and that should make for a very strong foundation to build a project like this on. It's obviously a good idea to do a bit of research and if there's help to get, great, but you should not give up on this regardless.

I'm sorry we didn't stay in touch, I miss you and Tv-land sometimes :)

Hey! :D I miss you too, it's great to hear from you! How are you doing? Thank you for the comment and the support, I'm encouraged by it! You're right that I'm probably making it more complicated than it needs to be (I do that a LOT), I just need to find a way to whittle down allllll my ideas and thoughts into an approachable, simple concept, somehow.
Don't be a stranger! :D

Yes, I do the exact same thing so that's why I thought you needed to hear it! ;D I mean, starting something unless I'm sure the result is gonna be perfect+ just seems pointless, but in a way that can actually be a good thing, if you can just get over that initial thought and get going ( ... )

Yeah I always get stuck and then I lose what little confidence I had in the idea and it all just sort of falls flat. I'm working on not quitting at the first sign of trouble, though ( ... )

Do you remember when we arranged those Tv-land Awards? :D We made a really good team I think, so if you do get stuck on something, or just want to discuss something, I'd be happy to help in any way I can ( ... )

Oh I'm sorry, you may be waiting a while then, I'm still having trouble nailing down exactly what it is I want to do and how to format it. I found a blog on Tumblr called Your Fave Is Problematic (http://yourfaveisproblematic.tumblr.com/) which is sort of one angle of it I want to do - they only do celebs, but basically I'm torn between wanting to go at it from a positive "here's some mostly good stuff" angle versus a negative "avoid this crap" angle, or ideally finding a way to do both.

I haven't really been working much on it the past week or so though, been a bit hectic, but it's quited down now and I'm bored/aimless right now so I might take a look at it again!
