If you're even CONSIDERING for real going to school in the UK, you have to (if you haven't yet) go to the nor_am_uk_ac community. It literally saved my life with all my applications to UK schools. Everything from visas to funding to travel info... it's the best. AND everyone is super nice :)

I will wave pompoms for you to be another Yank in the UK with me!

Also... it's probably not too late to apply there for 2008-09 and start in September. I think most programs don't cut off applications until the summer, but say that US students should apply sooner rather than later for visa purposes (but you can't apply till like June for a visa anyway, so...). But if you did want to jet to the UK for the fall, you still maybe could!

One more thing... if you DO visit the above LJ community, the tags on the left-hand side of it are a Godsend!

Oooh, pretty. Thanks! I had been thinking about it because all my favorite biologists are Brits, and this program's only a year, so it wouldn't be a crazy commitment or anything. I wouldn't be entering until '09, though, so plenty of time. Got to finish the second bachelor's.

You must be excited! How long will you be there?

The best part about Masters programs in the UK is that they're one year!!! And that you don't have to teach undergrads ;)

I actually don't know how long I'll be there. Right now, the Masters program I'm in is a one-year program. BUT a chunk of people in the program end up having the option to stay on for another four years in the PhD track. And even if I don't do that, Scotland has a special program that gives you a two-year visa extension if you graduate with a Masters or PhD from a Scottish university, so I would have two years to work legally over there after I finish the degree (after which if I'm in a "real job" or whatever, can stay on past that with a regular work visa). So it's more or less... indefinite. I do not plan on moving back to the States anytime in the next two or three years.

You should definitely look into it, the UK's a great place to live!

Yeah, I'm thinking even if I didn't stay on -- and as far as I can tell, there's no PhD program -- picking up a MSc in just a year would boost my application into PhD programs back in the States, too. And it's much more in line with what I'm interested in than most of the evo-eco-behavior departments.

Aww, expatriating, then? Probably a good time for it. Actually, my biggest concern is probably the dog. I can't go anywhere she can't anymore.

...it came up in the search. Evolution and behavior. It's probably the behavior of things I don't care about, though, so it's just on the first of many lists...
