This is very well-written and touches on the major issues. I'm beside you 100% on this (well, unless removing marriage from the government's purview altogether suddenly becomes possible granting everyone only civil unions legally. given that'll never happen though... hundred percent). I sincerely hope that others will recognize these truths as well and change the current and rather ugly policy.
That's the thing, because I think you know I'm with you on this one. If we're going to claim marriage is a religious word, then let's take it out of the govermental jargon and call them all civil unions. But it's foolish and discriminatory to have two lines at city hall - one for gay people and one for straight people.
I do not, and likely never will, understand why on earth this is an issue for the government to stick it's nose into to begin with. Saying that couples of the same sex can't be legally recognized as married under the eyes of the law and the federal government makes just about as much sense as saying they're going to refuse to recognize the marriage of two blonde people as legal. Neither of those really have any basis in logic and allowing it wouldn't have any impact on the rest of society that any other marriage wouldn't have
