2005 in words

Dear Journal,

This is what I think about music from 2005, and my opinion really matters.

GOOD:

Antony & the Johnsons - "I Am A Bird Now" - This album would be literally perfect except for the guest vocalists. His first album made you feel like it was just you and Antony, with him lisping his words for your ear and your ear alone. This time, I ( Read more... )

Oh beloved yet possibly but unlikely astray old brethren of the elektro industrial commune, hath Cevin Key truly forsaken thee?

And what sort of guy names nimself Devandra?

Cevin Key is now allowing the guy from Static X to sing on Skinny Puppy records. Also, he took Skinny Puppy out of retirement so he could make it into a Linkin Park knock-off. Therefore: he has forsaken me, not the other way around.

Devendra -- as far as I know, that's his real name. Talk about cred, eh?

I agree re: bravery. They are one of the worst bands I have ever heard inmy life. CYHSY is starting to get on my nerves, even though they are good, i just want to say, "can ya just maybe try to enunciate?"

i like the dandy warhols. perhaps you don't like them because they are poor. i'm going to go get stranded in white plains now.

I agree with: Antony & the Johnsons; Ladytron; Clap Your Hands Say Yeah; Depeche Mode (though it didn't grab me at first, but after seeing them...); New Order (same sitch as the Mode); LCD Soundsystem; Clor (surprisingly amazing); New Pornographers; Wolf Parade

I disagree with: Of Montreal (After one or two songs I want to stick pins in my ears and let the blood drown out the hideousness of it!); Vitalic (derivative, derivative, derivative... of something MUCH better); The Bravery (They're annoying, but some of their stuff is damn catchy!); Arctic Monkeys (Bad name - definitely. And they're demos are actually better than their first single. But I think they're pretty fucking good, considering the stage they're in. With the right production, they could be the next, er, um, Strokes?)

Okay, so I liked that Bravery song. And I've been known to tap my feet to "No Brakes." I was just trying to be cool, ok?

Of Montreal is a love/hate kinda thing.

I heart Clor.

Ladytron's "ok" still a bit too 20-year-old girl for me. I used to really like them...when I was 20.

Of Montreal -- you crazy. I think they sound very similar to Olivia Tremor Control, but yet original. Maybe they'll grow on you in the future? Or maybe not. How can you listen to "Oslo In The Summertime" and not get perma-boner? How?

Vitalic -- derivative yes, but sometimes something can be derivative and actually be really fucking good at the same time. It's rare, but it happens. And what is much better? (Please don't say Daft Punk.)

The Bravery - all I can say is: dude.

Arctic Monkeys -- I'll give them a chance once I hear more of their shit, but if I end up liking them after all, I'm keeping it a secret. All I know is that their first single is ass.

a) No.

b) No. (And Daft Punk ARE like a hundred bazillion times better!!!)

c) No.

d) No. (I listen to that single all the time... still. Them and White Rose Movement are my two favorite over-hyped British indie darlings.)

Yeah, 2005 wasn't exactly a banner year. Most of the music I got really excited about in 2005 was stuff from the 60's - 80's. Maybe I should make that list as well.

Neil Young's Harvest was my favorite album to listen to this year.

Neil Young has been on my list for quite some time. I'll have to get that one.
