I don't think it makes much of a difference, really, although I suppose it would kind of weird if a genuinely gay guy left you for a woman; he would probably have just been actually bi all along, though!

I would think it would be equally as bad being left by someone you care about.

Well, yeah. He's a photographer and NYC is home to about 100,000 photographers trying to make it big. So you have to want it.
