Wait till next year

The time has come to officially throw in the towel on the 2006 Red Sox. When Mark Loretta is your DH, Youkilis your left fielder, your manager is spitting up blood and you have three starting pitchers on the DL it's bad. But wait there's more! douglaslain August 29 2006, 09:19:50 UTC
The previous was written before I heard Ortiz had returned to Boston with an irregular heartbeat. What's next, Schilling, while sleeping, rolls over onto a bottle and cuts himself ala Paxton Crawford?

I thought the pena-arroyo trade at the beginning of the year was going to be followed by a Nixon trade for something. Pena hasn't been that bad, even though his defense is pretty creative. But when we reached the all-star break and still had four starting OF and no starting pitchers, it was a bad sign.

Giving up arroyo to count on wells or Clement was a bad idea.

As for now, it's definitely time to throw in the towel. No Manny + no Papi = no playoffs. That's even worse than the Yankees losing matsui and Sheffield. I hate the Yankees, but I have to give them credit for working melky, Wang, and Proctor into the mix (although we moved in Pena, Lester, and papelbon) without losing much and for pulling off the abreu-lidle trade. (we should have made that trade). Since the royals' sweep, this team has been adrift. Time to pull the plug on this season.
