Unable to enter "New" on Linux

When I run doukutsu (either ./doukutsu.bin w/ native SDL or the supplied libSDL), I cannot enter the New from the keyboard. It's a laptop, but I tried a full size keyboard. Arrow Up, Down, and ESC work. Does anyone have a clue for me? Thanks!

I believe you're looking for either z or x.
in game, z is jump and x is shoot, and they both work for menu selection.
(also a and s change weapons, q is inventory, and w is map.)
