Linux port of Cave Story

Hi, I'm using a EeePC with Ubuntu, which is not the fastest machine in the world. However it runs the Wine version of Cave Story very smoothly without any problem at all. But this version runs sooooo slow, I'm wondering if someone could do something about it? I'm willing to test whatever version someone comes with on my tiny computer ( Read more... )

Hmm, what kind of Eee PC is it? You might have more luck installing Windows 7 and trying that version, since the Linux version is a port. Amaya wrote some really amazing music code, and I don't know how it ports to each OS.

Other than that try to get the latest on http://www.cavestory.org

Well, as i said in Wine I have no problem at all, I don't even need to install 7.

I could very well use that version instead but I wish I could use a native version and not bother with Wine.

My pc is an Asus Eee 901 with Ubuntu 10.04. I'm using the latest version of Cave Story for Linux found on its website, which is 1.01.

Apart from finding a coder to clean up the Linux port I think you're out of luck. Although if you are playing Cave Story either as a new or old player, I definitely recommend the Wiiware version if you have access to it.

Version 1.01 is the only one that came out. Shortly after that development of the Wii version startet and development on all free ports stopped.

Did you try to run it at different resolutions and window vs. fullscreen?

The linuxport might use hardware acceleration for drawing, but the intel drivers on linux suck.
Do simple 3D games run at passable?

Your experience with the Linux port is, unfortunately, the same as mine. It's not your netbook at fault; the Linux port doesn't seem to be very well optimized. I found Wine to be the way to go as well.

Linux port uses SDL, otherwise it's the same code. So it could be SDL framebuffer access in combination with intel drivers.
