[What am I doing? Dracula asked himself as he floated silently near the roof of the CES, watching her.]

[He knew that it was partly atonement; partly wanting to do something to help make up for the failures that had gotten Aleera killed, and then driven her out to the edge of his life. His failures. That part he got. The regret he got as well. What was different now was hope--the hope that he could actually do something right by her. His teaching Lua knives would both help her defend herself, and free up Aleera to do other things with her. (Hopefully they would involve shoring up the girl's self esteem--she didn't even seem to regard herself well enough to lay blame where it belonged when she was threatened).]

[She's used to men looking at her like he is, and it's all right when he's doing it (he at least deserves to look for everything he's been giving her), but her shoulders draw in a little when she hears what he's saying. Telling her not to be nervous when no one would normally think she was? Maybe it's something vampires can tell. Something they see or smell that normal people don't. Maybe she's in over her head.]

Yeah? I don't know... but maybe I can pick it up pretty fast.

I was listening to her heartbeat again, wasn't I? I need to stop that. He coughed slightly and focused on her face.
