Pity not the fallen? What if they're just kinda stumbling a bit...

My husband and I were, ya know, kind of hanging out in the living room while he was showing me some photos he's shot recently and asking for my input, etc. OB and I tend to erupt into friskiness, often unprovoked. We are newlyweds. Anyhow - I looked out the window, for some reason, and there was this kid there, with a mohawk, staring straight ( Read more... )

Only one question... cali_nic September 30 2008, 13:29:30 UTC
WHY was he staring into someone else's window???

I dunno, my reaction if I had seen that would have been to avert my eyes and give the couple some privacy. Maybe that's just me.

Because I think he was quasi homeless and a drug addict. He was sitting on the stairs of the property across the alley from our window. It made me uncomfortable, for sure, but after my initial response, I was just sad. He didn't seem like a typical "crazy"...just really effed up and painfully alone. There are many people like that in Venice; not dangerous, or nuts enough to be institutionalized, but not particularly functional either. It can get to you sometimes.

Yeah. Normally I'm kind of anesthetized to it, but last night I saw this guy's face, and he was too humanized to be written off in that moment. I think what was jarring about him, in particular, for me, is that his body language and eye contact were unexpected. He didn't strike me as being a "slave".

I don't think he was a voyeur...in the clinical sense. doveserpent11 September 30 2008, 17:24:45 UTC
I think it was just one of those weird timing things. And I know, that was so weird to me that I apologized! Again, I think what I was responding to was just vibing on how messed up this guy's life was. It was very striking, for some reason.

No, I totally agree with you that it was a bizarre and uncalled for response. Totally reactive.
