Hmmm

I've been thinking of getting a new toy, a handgun. Before you ask, no, not to wander the streets at night when I can't sleep and perform random acts of vigilante justice. Suffice it to say I am a practical person with no faith in humanity. Be thankful I haven't moved to Idaho and fortified a small house in the mountains ( Read more... )

Get a Colt! yokel_ghost April 6 2005, 14:55:05 UTC
Someday NOTHING will be produced in the good ol' U.S. Own a piece of history! Will always have a great resale value, assuming you don't get it all knackered up.

.45 is great calibre for clearing an alley. Just Glance a shot off the pavement and it will tumble along at shin level and mow 'em down. Wheew! I gotta calm down!

Check out this sporty small babe:

Compare the specs, too. The Colt is shorter than both. Lighter than the HK. About same weight as teh Glockenspiel.

Hmm, where are these stats you're looking at? The H&K have composite handles, I thought they were literally 20% of the weight of a Colt.

personally, i'm not a fan of guns or owning a gun, but with the same breath i can say that i am not a fan of being mugged at gunpoint so i'm not gonna lecture you or shake my head in dissapointment... this world has some ugly people in it, i agree.

As for the gun itself, i'd say the smaller the better. Guns are pretty damaging to the human body no matter what the size. And i don't think you're really looking for any long range accuracy. Plus it'd be easier to carry.

Where would you carry it?

Really, carrying a gun does not even solve the getting mugged at gunpoint problem. I can only see it making things worse for everyone involved.

I really don't have a set plan for ever carrying regularly. I'm not like the people I've gone to gun shows with, who carry in the show, in the car, at the gas station, and in King's Family Restaurant on the way home.

Smaller does not alway mean better, depending on what you're looking at. For example, an errant 9mm round penetrates further through walls and floors than a .45 round. And a good choice of gun frame size is what fits in your hand most comfortably. Subcompacts are neat, but damn I feel like they're barely in my hand. Being uncomfortable with a deadly weapon = bad idea.

"Being uncomfortable with a deadly weapon = bad idea."

I agree. Thats why you should go to one of 'em gun ranges with it for a little while after you get one.

Sooo... if not for street protection, then what? Home protection?

Maybe you just want to have something for when you eventually go crazy and want to go on a killing spree. Those damn waiting periods can seem like forever when you're crazy and itching to kill.

Short answer: Personal protection.

Long answer: At the moment, I do not feel carrying a gun on my person at all times provides any safety benefits that outweigh the dangers incurred by carrying it. But who knows how humanity will be behaving after any impending economic/natural disaters. Then carrying the gun may be worthwhile.

But at any rate, I would like to get used to the thing as soon as possible.

If that makes sense.
