Last year's Halloween was ..memorable.

For one thing, it was my first Halloween. We don't do it in Australia. In fact I don't think I'd even been to a fancy dress party (although I went to one 21st party which said to 'wear your favourite clothes', but what is that anyway? Who wears clothes they hate to a party?). So I got all excited and took a friend's idea of going to the downtown Halloween Party as Edward Scissorhands.

Constructing scissorhands out of an umbrella, painting a plastic raincoat black with some sort of toxic tar that cost too much and I haven't been able to use since, running around town Saturday afternoon trying to find white makeup that didn't come in small expensive bottles for Japanese women who want to look more like Nicole Kidman, dressing at Natasha's and helping her dress up too, spray painting my hair black and giving it the electrified look .... then riding through the mall with Natasha on our bicycles and getting stared at, meeting up with Ashley dressed as Caesar in all but a bedsheet, going into the convenience store to buy drinks, legally drinking on the curbside and scaring the people walking by .. It was so much fun!!

But then ...

Crammed into a smoky foreigner's bar that has a combined floorspace of about five sheets of A4 paper, not being able to talk to people because the rock band was too loud and too close, not being able to dance without stabbing someone with my scissorhands, not being able to move through the crowd even to buy an overpriced drink from the bar, someone buying and bringing me a corona which another person knocked over after my first sip, unconscionable nepotism in the selection of winners for best costume, riding home in the freezing cold, finally getting home and then realising that I'd lost my wallet, spending 30 drunken minutes in the shower trying to get the black out of my hair and the white off my face so I could go back into town, riding around town at 5am in the freezing cold trying to find my wallet before the traffic came back on the roads ... It was so not fun.

So I swore that I wouldn't do Halloween again this year. But actually I wouldn't mind just going to the party, since it's been a couple of weeks since I've gone out. But I have koto rehearsal at school the next morning from 8am, plus a Halloween party at the orphanage that afternoon, so I think I'll have to give it a miss. I'm tempted to go into town for dinner and a few drinks afterwards, but I doubt that I'd be able to resist going out with everyone. Meh. Hopefully Kate will be in tonight too and we can watch a movie or something.

Decisions.
