What a great story that you've packed into this drabble. I really love how there is a feeling of Violet triumphing in accomplishing her duty: it's not sad or pitiable or taken something away from her. It is a triumph that illustrates how developed her skills are, and her well-deserved self-confidence, with that little bit of arrogance that also adds to her confidence.
Thank you so much! Violet is a very confident woman and I wanted to bring that through with the drabble, how nothing seems to daunt her, and how in her own way she is like Rosamund or Mary, not wanting to do what people expect of her.
Oh, this is how to write a story in a couple of hundred words!
I get these feelings sometimes that Violet's husband may have been a touch dominating (not unusual for the time and of someone from his peerage I would suspect), and that is why she can be sneaky. She was used to accomplishing things in such a way that the male of the family didn't even realise they were being played.
Apparently she started with this skill at an early age!
My feeling with Violet is that she is similar to Mary. She is very capable and independent but she does it within the parameters of society and expectations. Thanks, glad you liked it!

I also like the phrase "necessitous creatures".
Great job!
