A/N: I thought the prompt for this week looked lonely, so I wrote this.

She had thought once, when she was younger and less experienced, of making Mrs Patmore her ally. Mrs Patmore was lord of the kitchen however, and rarely had need of allies. What she needed were underlings, and Sarah O’Brien had no intention of willingly becoming the servant of another servant.
Now that her skills have been honed by years and years of practice, the great irony is what stands in her way is her own carefully cultivated reputation. She’s never been friendly per say, and after all these years it seems everyone is wary of her, at least all the ones who aren’t too new to know.
It is a great pity, for something cold and strange grew between her and Thomas during the war, and for the first time in years she admits to herself that she wishes she had another friend in the house.
