I've done a Downton time jump, and set this way in the future. :)
“I can’t believe the wee bairn I once held in my arms is about to leave home,” Elsie sighed, relaxing into the settee.
“I can’t believe you and Mrs Patmore have spent all day organising this so-called going away party. There was never such a thing in my day, I can tell you,” Charles grumbled.
“He’s grown into a fine lad.”
“I’m surprised he’s made anything of himself with all you women mollycoddling him for the past sixteen years.”
She lowered her chin and squinted over at him. “Mollycoddling?” she drawled, her accent sharpening.
“You, his mother, Mrs Patmore.” He ticked off the names on his fingers as he lowered himself beside her. “Then, of all people, Lady Edith. I still find it difficult to comprehend that she allowed him and his mother to live under her roof for all those years.”
He was deliberately baiting her, knowing they had vastly differing opinions on the situation.
“And now his newly-widowed grandmother has joined this broody hens’ club.”
“Broody what?” she sputtered.
“Clucking around.”
“Mr Carson,” she growled his name, keeping her tone stern, “if Lady Edith ever should hear you call her a broody hen, I think we’ll be asked to leave the estate.”
With a soft grunt, he lifted her feet into his lap and began to gently massage them.
“I know why you’re partial towards the boy,” he said softly.
“Yes? And why would that be?” she murmured, closing her eyes and fully enjoying his caress.
“You adore all Charlies; admit it.”
Despite her thinning and aging skin, his reverent touch still made her gently shiver. She’d dreamt of being with him like this for so many years, the reality of their relationship sometimes took her breath away.
“On that subject, Charles Carson, you may just be correct.”
