“You’re not having one, I sincerely hope,” the old man reprimanded as John handed him a pint.
“Not today,” John assured him with a smile.
“Do you think Anna will join us?”
“No, she’s at the motel.”
“You could court her.” The elderly ex-butler leaned closer. “I often see her mooning around the rooms and I say to Mrs Hughes, ‘Mrs Hughes, I do believe our Anna is sweet on Mr Bates’.”
“And what does Mrs Hughes say?” John asked in a dramatic whisper.
“Oh, she accuses me of being a hopeless romantic.”
“Mrs Hughes is a much stronger woman than I to accuse you of such things.”
“She is. And stubborn. With a fiery temper! She’s never afraid to take me down a peg or two, I can tell you.”
“From what I observed, she’s always very respectful of you and your position, Mr Carson.”
John watched as Carson’s stern features softened noticeably.
“I enjoy our wrangles. Making up is wonderful. She especially likes it when I kiss that spot right behind--”
Carson flicked a glance towards the door of the pub. “She’ll be here soon, won’t she?”
“Anna?” John asked carefully.
“No, no. Elsie. Mrs Hughes. We can walk back to Downton together. So difficult not to take her arm when we walk along,” he confessed with a sigh.
“I don’t think Mrs Hughes will be coming today,” he said softly. The housekeeper had passed away three years ago, before the first of Mr Carson’s mild strokes.
“It will have to wait until she slips to my room later then. Nothing better than sleeping with a woman’s soft body, Mr Bates.” Carson took a sip of his lager before adding in a serious tone: “You should woo Anna.”
John smiled mildly. “I might just at that, Mr Carson.”
