This is lovely! Poor Joe, I always feel sorry for him somehow (even though I'm happy Elsie stayed).

I quite agree, I do feel a bit sorry for Joe, but I am also glad that Mrs Hughes stayed, because I like her lots. But she did look so happy when she was with him, and he seemed to be a very nice man.

I think the thing I like the most about Joe is that he was never the 'villian'. We don't boo and hiss him (like I do Sean or Carolanne in a/r fics for example). I think you give us this feeling in this drabble.

I love the first sentence especially.

The first sentence went through a couple of rewrites, so I'm glad it works for you.

I do really appreciate the way they wrote Joe, and that particular plot line. Aside from being a more pleasant story to watch, it is also more interesting, I think, than the old flame as 'villain'. There's a lot more to ponder in a story like Joe and Elsie's, where their failure to have a successful romantic relationship doesn't also destroy their respect and affection for one another.
