Character/s: Anna, John; so naturally Anna/John

Anna’s hands shook as she reread the telegram that she had kept folded in her pocket for the past two weeks.

Appeal went through. Stop.
John will be released on the 24th of the month. Stop.
The cottage on the grounds will be ready in time. Stop.
Regards, Sir Robert Crawley. Stop.

The same smile graced Anna’s lips as it did every time she read the telegram.

“Mrs. Bates, what could possibly have you so distracted not to notice that someone has entered the room?” Came a voice from behind her. She froze, she’d know that voice anywhere. It was the same one she heard in her head every night when she went to sleep.

“Only something of the utmost importance, Mr. Bates.” Anna slowly turned around.

“I shan’t disturb you than--” Upon laying eyes on him Anna decided she didn’t want to play this game any longer. Before he could anticipate it she launched herself into his arms, cane sent clattering to the floor as he embraced his wife.

“I don’t understand. The telegram said--”

“Matthew Crawley pulled a few strings and they granted an early release. They convinced someone that I don’t have to be in the cell while they fill out paperwork.”

“Oh John!” Anna managed before finding his lips with her own. Her hands grasped at him, letting go of the worn piece of paper. Her husband had been returned, she no longer needed to hold onto the printed promise.
