I'd like to just remind the general populace that there are a number of citizens entirely willing to volunteer their time and effort free of charge for just about anything you can think of. In a situation such as ours, this is survival, not charity. Of course it's perfectly fair to expect payment for services rendered in the ordinary course of a ( Read more... )

...okay, look. Me and Cloud only started this business because we were planning on doing it before we even got here as a chance to get our lives back on track and start over. And we're not even asking for much at all in payment.

We're not trying to be greedy or anything.

I'm sorry if I sound judgmental, but I truly believe that if everyone here did the same thing no one would make it off this island alive at all.

We weren't trying to encourage that. Nobody has to follow our lead.

You simply may be discouraging someone from seeking the help they need because they'll think they have to pay for it.

Then consider this post an effort to prevent that, I suppose.

Why do some people around here expect "payment" for anything?! It's... gross weird it doesn't make sense!

I'm not trying speculate, I just want to make sure people get the help they need without worrying about having to pay someone for it.

No, they shouldn't have to pay for anything they need. Besides...since there's no munny, someone may not want whatever people try to pay them with. Or...some people have weird ideas about what is "payment."

Weird ideas?

Don't you think you're being a little harsh? I mean, even if this is a prison 'nd all, it's not weird to offer your services expecting a little payment, you know? I mean, it could be like a bagel or maybe an I.O.U. sort of thing. Acting like this isn't good either...

The fairest thing to expect in return is help when you're the one who needs it. What more can you really ask for in a situation like this?

... Well, where I come from, there's nothing wrong with expecting something back when you do something for someone. Sure, we don't all have money here, but... I guess I can't really talk, huh? 'cause of what I did back home.

Of course there's nothing wrong with that. But I'm going to guess that you came from a free society.

I'll try not to judge anyone's actions too harshly. What I want most is for people to know that there is help available for them whether they can make some return for it or not.

I dunno, I guess I don't see the big deal. Seems like a "Scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" situation, which is fair enough. I mean, if I need a crab problem dealt with, I don't mind fixing up a heater or something in return. It's not like anybody's gonna turn into Manhattan's Repo man or something.

Yes, that's exactly what it is. If you need something, it'll be provided to you. In return, help those who need what you can provide. That's how we've survived this long and how we'll continue to survive. The important thing to me is making sure people know there is help available to them without having to worry about how they can pay for it.

Yeah, guess so. Feels like a bit of a moot point though really. I mean everybody knows money's meaningless anymore. It seems to me like they're making the existing system more "official." Helps get the word around about what services people are offering too.

Well anyway, seems like we're on the same enzyme here, just in slightly different binding sites!

I was told to find you if I wanted to speak with someone who lived here before the attack. Are you available?
