Here is something I realized about House.
Stacy - worked really hard to win her back, but eventually asked her to leave when she was about to leave Mark because he felt he couldn’t make her happy.
Thirteen - tried so hard to get her back on the team, but eventually fired her to let her go be happy after she agreed to come back.
Cuddy - tried really hard to woo her, but eventually gave his blessings for her to be with Lucas (uh, totally ignoring the whole Season 6 finale. Loved the finale with the focus on Hanna and legs, hated the final 3 minutes)
Wilson - obviously struggled with the notion of Wilson being in a happy relationship at first, but eventually came to a sort of grudging acceptance about Amber’s role in Wilson’s (and thus, his own) life.
Wilson - did everything he could in his own misguided House way to get Wilson to continue treatment, but when Wilson finally said he would continue with chemo, he said no, and decided to respect Wilson’s wishes to just lead a happy 5 months together.
What does this say about House?
I think he really isn’t a selfish person - he acts instinctively to protect what he feels he needs, coming across as selfish and needy - but it’s almost a bit like it’s a necessary process for him to eventually accept that it is happening - and he eventually does let them go to be happy, even if it means he ends up alone. It's almost like he knows he can't attain happiness - because of who he is and what he does - so he lets them go have what he can possibly never have.
And geez, is my formatting is screwed up or what.
