Duped, part 5

"Haven't lost a penny, Mom," says Pete cheerfully as he answers the Farnsworth.

"Is Myka with you?" asks Artie. Usually she would be leaning into frame by now.

"No, she's downstairs on the Whitmans. I'm getting ready to search their room. What's up?"

"Uh, no, yeah..." Artie's trying his best to keep his tone causal. "How's your radar?"

"You mean, am I having a 'vibe' or something?" Pete always pronounces the word as though it has air quotes around it, regardless of the situation.

"Yeah. Give it a second... anything out of the ordinary? Anything at all?"

Pete's smile has faded a little. "With Myka?"

...oh, really. "With anything."

"Y'know, now that you mention it, there is something."

"What?" Artie leans forward in his seat.

In a conspiratorial whisper: "The buffet is overpriced."

Artie resists the urge to crack up laughing. "Yeah, other than that."

"Nope," says Pete with a casual grin. "No 'vibe,' no trouble. It's all good."

"Alright. Yeah." Artie looks over his shoulder at Leena, then back to the Farnsworth. "Are you sure?"

Pete huffs a quiet laugh. "Artie, is there something I should know?"

"Nonononono, everything's good, it's just a status check, don't dawdle, stay in touch, goodbye."

"Kirk out."

Artie flips the Farnsworth's cover closed and turns in his seat to address Leena. "He's fine. So is Myka. Okay? Okay."

Leena looks less than convinced.

To be honest, Artie isn't completely convinced either.
