things i don't like about world cup soccer...

so, for those of you who watched the game yesterday, you'll know that it wasn't without its fair share of drama.  yes, there were dives (on both sides!) and probably trash-talking (also on both sides), but i found it to be a pretty exciting game despite that.  the italians dominated the first half, and then they lost their legs.  the second half ( Read more... )

If his hand wasn't all taped up, Zidane could have just decked him... flaggday July 11 2006, 04:22:17 UTC
When I was playing soccer in high school, Zidane was totally my hero. I could happily ignore little issues with sportsmanship, like when he viciously stomped on a Saudi player lying on the ground early in the 98 World Cup.

But really Zinadine... what made that a good idea? Did you think France didn't need you for the next ten minutes? Did you think there were five guys who should all be taking PKs instead of you? Completely disregarding the mean-spiritedness, what made that a good idea in terms of France winning, or in terms of how you'll be remembered for the next 30 years?

On a related note, early on I was sad that, if France won because of that first totally undeserved PK early on, it wouldn't be fair. Fortunately Zambrotta more than made up for it with his own dive (in his own box? Isn't that backwards?) and then a horrendous foul in the box that wasn't called later on. That made it all seema lot fairer.

yeah, on that related note you mentioned...i was feeling a bit steamed about the french dive that led to zidane's (really ugly) PK. but once i saw zambrotta's little move, i figured things were even. :)

anyway, i think zidane will ultimately be remembered more for what he brought to the game than how he left it. which, i suppose, is the way it should be. after all, even i have to concede that he is quite a player. but i really think he should explain himself to the public before little kids all over the world start thinking, "hey, he head butted a guy and still got the golden ball...that must mean what he did was A-OK."

Based on how everybody's in the media is reacting today, probably so- but, Diego Maradona scored two goals against England in the 198(2?) final. The first one was "FIFA goal of the century" or something like that. But how often have you ever heard someone say "Maradona... goal of the century", versus "Maradona... Hand of God"?
