Title: "Charlies farewell"
Fandom: Dead Poets Society
Pairing: Todd Anderson (Ethan Hawke), Charlie Dalton (Gale Hansen) = main characters

Summary: It's Charlie's expulsion day
and the dead poets society members say goodbye to their friend.

Snowflakes fell quietly onto the dark-blue hoods of the dead poets’ coats.
They came, all except Cameron, to say goodbye to their friend Charlie.

This was the most horrible day of their lives because they lost three very important people, who stood so close to them; Neil, Mr. Keating... and now Charlie.
Meeks, Pitts, Knox and Todd were standing in front of their "home", Welton, shivering because of the cold and the hurting truth of losing another friend.
Tears were in everyone's eyes.
Even Charlie, who was always the tough one, couldn't hold back his emotions.
He sniffed shortly.
"So...this is it, guys. Time's up for me...I hope, you don't forget me" he said smiling through his tears.
The others smiled back and shook their heads.
Knox was the first one who hugged Charlie. He squeezed him tightly and his tears rolled down his face like tiny silver streams.
He could hardly speak, but he tried: "Charlie... you're my best friend and you'll always be... thank you for... for everything!"
Charlie smiled and rubbed over Knox' back. "No problem Knoxious. You'll also be my best friend, no doubt about it!
And be happy with Chris, she's the one for you!"
Then Charlie pulled back and ruffled friendly Knox' hair, which made the boy giggle.
The next one was Meeks, who found himself in Charlie' arms. "My brilliant genius...
Oh Meeks, who's gonna help me now with Latin...and English?"
Meeks blushed and put his glasses straight.
"Don't forget trig" he said and laughed. The others joined in.
Then he pulled back and there were tears in his wise eyes again. "Take care of yourself...and good
luck at your new school!"
Charlie smiled and shook Meeks' hand.
After Meeks, Pitts stepped forward and flung his long clumsy arms around Charlie.
"Pittsy, my big boy...I'm gonna miss you too!"
Pitts laughed as Charlie said "big boy" and nodded. "Thank you for the wonderful time...You're a great friend!"
Charlie grinned and tapped on Pitts shoulders.

Now, it was Todd's time to say goodbye.
His chin trembled violently and his face was flushed because of the uncountable tears that were rolling down his face.
He stepped nervously on his feet and his hands were clenched into fists.
They all looked at him now, waiting for him to do or say something.
"Todd......hey..." Charlie said and gave him an encouraged smile. He stretched out his hand and waited.
Todd smiled back timidly and finally began to walk slowly.
But he didn't come far.
The floor was very smooth because of the frozen snow and just as he tried to grab Charlie's offering hand,
he couldn't help it and slipped.
He was so shocked that his heart missed a beat for a second. Charlie reacted quickly and caught Todd before
he fell on the ground.
Todd tried to catch his breath and clung to Charlie's coat. He felt Charlie pulling him close and let it happen.
He relaxed, put his head on Charlie's shoulder and closed his eyes.
Knox, Pitts and Meeks were still in a state of shock, which made them too stiff to move and talk. Knox was the first one
to find his voice again. "You...okay, Todd?"
Todd mumbled something like "I'm ok" and moved closer to Charlie. Then Meeks began to talk: "We're going inside, it's too cold
out here. You can find us in my room, alright?"
Todd nodded almost imperceptibly. He could hardly hear the voices of his friends; they seemed to be very far away.
The three boys said
goodbye again to Charlie and promised reunions after one or two years.

Then, there was silence again.
It stopped snowing but Todd was still crying. Charlie noticed it and stroke Todd's back.
"Shh...it's alright. Don't cry, Todd."
Todd buried his head into Charlie's pullover. "I-I don't want you to go...please don't leave me!
I c-can't stand it!" he said with a choking voice.
"Neither do I, Todd" Charlie replied and felt tears welling up in his eyes again.
After some moments, he said: "You know what?
As I caught you when you slipped, it reminded me of this morning
as you broke down in the snow."
Todd remembered and nodded. "Yes....you caught me twice....
You saved me again."
Both boys smiled and moved closer to each other.
After some minutes, Todd asked quietly:
"Can you...can you kiss me one last time?"
Charlie chuckled. "Sure.....but not here."

He took gently Todd's hand and they walked together through the courtyard,
down the giant meadow to the shore and stepped carefully onto the footbridge.
Now, they were face to face.
It made Todd blush and he bowed his head. But Charlie's stopped him.
"Hey...!" he said softly and put his fingers under Todd's chin to raise him up.
Then, he began to wipe away Todd's hot tears with his thumbs. After that, his hands combed back Todd's sandy hair
and then, his hands rested on Todd's neck.
Todd closed his eyes and stepped closer to Charlie, so their noses almost touched.
Suddenly, he felt Charlie's breath on his quivering lips, so he parted them to feel the other boy's lips.
Charlie closed his eyes and bent his head to cover Todd's lips with his own.
Their lips were chapped because of the cold, but the boys didn't care. It felt so good to love the other one after
all this pain.
Charlie stroke gently Todd's cheeks and massaged tenderly the boy's tongue with his tongue.
Todd moaned and kissed Charlie deeper and more passionately.

Oh,
Todd loved Charlie's kisses...more than Neil's kisses.
Neil's kisses were always sweet and caring and beautiful, but they never really satisfied Todd's hunger.
Charlie's kisses were varied and exciting and Todd loved to be the only one to get them.
The kisses always challenged him and helped him to find hidden fantasies inside of him.

Maybe, they even gave him courage to be self-confident...

Todd didn't know how long they stood there and kissed.
Maybe ten minutes, maybe an hour...he didn't know.
But suddenly, the intimacy got destroyed as they heard a loud horn. Charlie was frightened and pulled back from Todd's mouth.
"My father's here..." he said with sadness in his voice.
Todd felt a painful hitch in his heart and bowed his head. "Okay..." he whispered.
They went back to Welton without touching...

Then, everything went pretty hectic.
Mr. Dalton put the luggage of his son into the trunk and after talking to Mr. Nolan, he sat back into his car.
Charlie shook Mr. Nolan's hand and gave him a fake smile.
Then Charlie walked back to Todd. He smirked slightly just like he did on the first day they saw each other.
But Charlie's father got a little nervous. "Come on, Charles, get in the car!"
"Yes sir, just a second" Charlie called back. Then he hugged Todd again and said: "I'll call you, when I'm home, I promise!
Don't worry, we'll see each other again. I'll try to visit you, ok?"
Todd nodded. "O-Ok, Charlie!" Then he added as quiet as he could: "I love you."
Charlie let out a happy sigh. "I love you too!" he whispered back.
Mr. Dalton pushed impatiently onto the horn.
Charlie pulled away from Todd and rummaged in his pockets. Then he took out a piece of paper and gave it to Todd.
"Here, my phone number and my address. Don't lose it!"
Todd smiled grateful and shook his head: "Never!"
Charlie smiled back at him one last time and jumped
into the car.
"I'll call you" were Charlie's last words. Then he shut the door and the car rushed away.
Todd could see Charlie's waving hand out of the car window so he waved back.

He stood there until he couldn't see the car anymore.
A flood of deep sadness and loneliness overcame him and he wanted to scream "IT'S NOT FAIR! IT'S NOT FAIR!" but he stayed silent.
He felt as if Charlie would have taken the last part of his soul away with him and now,
there was just his "worthless and embarrassing" covering left.

Todd was present physically, but mentally he was with Charlie, Neil and Mr. Keating.

"OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN!"

Todd had to do it.
Mr. Keating was his hero and Todd wanted to show him that. Everyone should
see what Mr. Keating meant for him.
But Todd also did it for Neil and Charlie.
And somehow, he knew that Neil watched him from up above and Charlie could feel it in his veins, as he
stood there on his desk and contributed his verse...
He knew that they both were smiling at that moment.../lj-cut
