Schreber never really has good dreams but his dreams have been easier lately. Mostly he dreams he is wandering the city at night, alone. It's not too horrible a dream because when he wakes up Sarah is in the house baking or playing with the kitten and it's okay. He's not alone anymore.
In this dream he is not alone. Schreber wanders through the city looking for John or Sarah, and it's empty and looking kind of run down. John would never let it get this run down where is John? It's so empty and he's so alone. Where is Sarah?
He comes limping around a corner and Sarah is there. Her hair is gone and her skin is pale and she's all dressed in black. Someone else is with her, Anna or it used to be before her hair all fell out from whatever they replace the bodily fluids with to make them into a suitable host body. He stumbles back in alarm and puts his hand out to a wall for security, just like Foxy always did.
"What's the matter, doctor?" Sarah's voice isn't hers anymore.
He turns and limp-stumble-runs away and it's only a dream isn't it? He's got a pacemaker and he forces himself to remember that and he runs further and faster then he used to but he's still got a bad leg and a bad back his heart is pounding after a couple blocks. That's okay because he has to stop running when he sees Cornelius coming out of his clock shop up ahead, quietly locking up. The younger man has on a long dark coat today and his bald head gleams in the streetlights. It's only a dream this has to be only a dream and dreams can be controlled. He calls out for John. Cornelius up the street turns and stares at him but he keeps calling John's name to the dark sky. The stars are gone and it's cloudy up there but maybe he's planning snow? Schreber calls until he has to stop to catch his breath again and that's when there's a gentle touch on his arm.
"I'm right here." John's voice is flat and empty but when Schreber turns to look John still has his hair. His clothes are dark and a little ragged and he's just slightly too pale. John's eyes are dead and empty. Cornelius and Sarah and Anna are approaching all from different directions and John seems not to care. "We're right here, Doctor. What did you want?" Schreber looks into John's eyes, calm and just a little puzzled and very emotionless.
He pulls away shaking and pushes Cornelius out of the way to run again.
