Yesterday, I started re-listening to the audio version of Matthieu Ricard's Happiness. He is a French neuroscientist turned Buddhist monk who offers beautiful insight into what he calls the "skill" of being peaceful and happy in the face of life's ups and downs. I'd extend that to treating yourself with compassion, too

God, yeah. That's something I have trouble with... I think I got that trouble from my mother. I used to sometimes snap her out of it with "Would you treat anyone else like that?"

It's much harder to recognize, in myself, when the snapping-out-of-it is required. :-/
