Sounds interesting. Must give it a try if I ever get hold of a dead fridge. Would definitely be interested in anything else you find out/try related to this.
Well, I'm sure I can answer other questions, I'm just not sure what they might be yet! The fridge in question is still working very nicely months later, so will definitely call it a success! BTW. did you get my IM about aussie50 and youtube search. I wana meet this guy!!!
Ok, glad you like it as you'll probably be the first to actually put it into practice, besides me of course! Actually, I might do another post about various HC substitutes for the common refrigerants. Basicly, propane and propane butane mixtures can be used to emulate most common refrigerants. Yep, you can gas up a fridge with a mix of the barbeque bottle and a can of cigarette lighter fluid. There are potential problems, but most can be solved I believe! so might post on that if anyone wants to know. Apparently, it has been legalised to use HCs in systems now, as it was illegal for some stupid reason! Not, that I think we yet have the fridge police who come to knock on every house door to check what exactly is pumping around in your fridges and air cons!
Definitely keen to give it a go at some stage. I wonder how you'd go doing a car aircon where the oil is usually squirted in with the gas? I didn't see your im, but I've since had a look and he's got some really interesting stuff in there. The stuff with the washing machine and the plasma panel was quite interesting, as were some of his engine and auotmotive projects.
Well, I try to write articles in here, but dosen't happen too often! This thing is getting more and more complex and cluttered, and harder to use by the year! I'll probably move over to some kind of wiki or wordpress or something eventually! Still, If I do something out of the ordenary, and it has good results, I'll certainly write it down here, or somewhere!!!
Many thanks for your excellent article. The fridge part of my old fridge-freezer had gradually stopped working over a period of about 3 years and I couldn't find any other explanation than out of gas so I ordered up the valve and a can of Radio Spares Freezer gas which is R134a, exactly as the fridge label. The valve went on easily enough - the fridge tube was slightly under the 0.25 inch so I put a couple of layers of tape behind the packing piece on the valve to make up the difference. I used the tip of a ballpoint pen as an injector nozzle, with a junior hacksaw I removed the ball and the ink tube - I had already checked that the taper on the plastic part of the pen fitted well into the fridge gas valve; I had to clean out the surplus ink from the nozzle of course. I removed the spray button from the Freezer can and simply used black electrical tape to attach the nozzle to the tube on the can, they were the same size. I wore a leather glove on my left hand operating the gas valve in case any spray escaped and to protect
( ... )
I think you may be right about there being a leak, the performance has dropped off again. But, I think I may know where it is; I caught "someone" a few months back using a carving knife to de-ice it and I have found what looks like a small area of damage in one of the freezer coils with some brown staining around the area - oil? The coil is made of some sort of silvery metal, maybe aluminium so I am thinking of patching it with a small piece of copper and two-part "liquid metal" as adhesive rather than trying to solder it. I'm just a bit concerned about how the patch might cope with the cold.
