Just back from a conference in Guangzhou in China (2 hours from Hong Kong by train), a little disappointed at the rather limited exposure to Chinese culture that it gave me

Wow, how amazing! How far off from you was it?

From looking at the map, and remembering where we were, I'd guess a hundred miles or two. Maybe less. The take-off site was near the horizon with us cruising at presumably 30,000 feet. Certainly I saw the flare and dimming of the rocket as the first stage rocket separated, and got a hint of the multiple rocket parts for a second after separation.
